Mitipics March 2013 - For many organizations, the choice is currently between hosting on-premise (i.e. at their own location) and hosting off-site, and we recently advised a medium-sized non-profit organization in the healthcare sector. In addition to the intended cost savings, this organization had a whole series of 'soft' preconditions that played a role. We summarize the experiences.

It's a familiar story, an organization that has been familiar with on-premise hosting of their business environment for many years is running into hardware obsolescence, whether or not this is simultaneous with a foreseeable departure of the employees doing the management. Reason to start thinking about renewing the hardware. But in 2013, with all the associated technological developments, is it still opportune to invest in your own hardware? Terms such as cloud computing and managed hosting are being bandied about; it's supposed to be the future and often cheaper too. Technically a lot is possible, but do both solutions fit within an organization equally well?
