Conventional Employers are more cautious about hiring ict workers. Open Source service providers are eager to hire them!

According to Gerjan Mazenier, director of secondment agency Brunel ICT, employee turnover has decreased a lot in recent months. Whereas many ict workers a year ago switched to an employer who pays a hundred euros more per month, they are now holding on to their positions longer.

Does not become dependent!

Career counselor Anita Kuiken notices that job hopping is diminishing. "In times of recession, dependency resurfaces," she notes. "Everyone is holding their breath." Kuiken especially notices that companies are more cautious about hiring, which means job application processes are taking longer.

Keep working on your personal development

Nevertheless, Mazenier believes that employees should not stay with their bosses at any cost. According to him, it is not smart to give up a permanent contract for a few tens more per month, but when it comes to personal development, employees are allowed to take a little more risk. Mazenier: "Standing still in your development is never good, especially in the ICT industry." Employees have to weigh up for themselves, he says, but would do well to see how much security a new boss can offer. "Otherwise, you run the risk of being benched," he says.

According to Michael Page IT manager Marinke de Groot, "it is tempting for ict workers to change jobs a lot in this tight market," but they would be better off gaining work experience and working on their personal development in other ways. "If you change every six months or every year you can't get your teeth into anything properly. A good project lasts longer than six months on average."
