It has taken a long time but the first concrete code of Magento 2 has finally been released. Is it an improvement on the current code? Vicus will of course keep an eye on it for you but feel free to contact us if you want to know more.

Magento has been one of the most professional and popular software packages on the market for years. Vicus uses several systems, but we certainly cannot ignore Magento and have already created several beautiful web stores with it. Of course we also follow future versions closely and we are already aware of Magento 2. It was first mentioned in 2010. After that, of course, a lot happened. For example, Magento was acquired by eBay in 2011 and developments in e-commerce, and therefore in the current software of Magento, have not stood still either. In 2010 the desire was expressed to launch a completely new software with Magento 2 within twelve months but after that it has been quiet for a long time.

It appears to have been a lull before the storm because behind the scenes development was certainly continuing and now the first beta is available for public download. This is new software that incorporates all the best practices of the current software. At Vicus we follow these developments closely. We are very enthusiastic about Magento but of course we also see that this software can be improved.

The most important improvements in a row:

  • The software is based on newer code
  • The code has been made more flexible
  • Magento 2 offers better support for automated testing
  • A new file environment
  • Better opportunities for customization

Updating to Magento 2? Not before 2016

The first code of Magento 2 has been released. However, this does not mean that you should change your website right away. This first beta code is purely for developers to learn about the changes. A finished version for developers is planned for the first quarter of this year, the third quarter the first beta for you as a user is planned and in the fourth quarter 1.0, the first official version, will be released. So if you really want to sell something with the new software, you will not be able to get started with it until early 2016 at the earliest.

You will therefore have to be patient for at least another year before you can switch to Magento 2. However, the new software does offer a small glimpse into the way webshop software will work in the future. We keep a close eye on it, so we can give you the best advice, not only today, but also tomorrow. Would you also like to become familiar with the path Magento is taking with its new version?
